My approach to postpartum depression therapy

Postpartum depression therapy should be inclusive of all caregivers. Whether you’re an LGBTQ+ parent, ENM/poly parent, military parent, or a foster or adoptive parent, rest assured that I have the tools to empower you and help you get back on your feet.

My approach to postpartum depression therapy is rooted in attachment theory. Attachment theory is important for treating postpartum depression because it focuses on enhancing the emotional bond between you and your newborn. That helps improve your mental health.

In addition to focusing on the parent-child bond, we’ll work on enhancing the emotional bond between you and your partners in caregiving. Whenever possible, we include primary caregivers in treatment so that you and your co-parent(s) feel united as a team and can support one another more effectively.

Becoming a parent, especially when becoming a parent for the first time, brings unique challenges that require an individualized, holistic approach to therapy. When you work with me, we’ll look at all the aspects of your well-being as a parent, not just emotional or psychological aspects. We’ll also look at how you’re eating and sleeping, what you can do to stay active, what other health concerns you may be dealing with, and your social supports.

You don’t have to do this alone, and you’re definitely not alone. You’ve got this, and we can help you get through this.

Hey there! I’m Julia.

I’m a licensed psychotherapist and clinical supervisor specializing in helping new parents with postpartum depression and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

In our work together,  you’ll feel deeply supported, heard, and validated, and you’ll see that you don’t have to go through this difficult and new experience alone.

Together, we will find ways to help you stay grounded, boost your self-esteem, and enhance your relationships so that you can be the best parent you can be.

How Postpartum Depression Therapy Works

 Postpartum Depression Therapy FAQs

  • The duration varies depending on your individual or family needs, but generally ranges from a few months to a year. Parents who need more intensive support can attend more than one therapy session per week, and parents who need less intensive support may do well with weekly sessions.

  • Absolutely. We encourage parents to attend sessions together if possible, but fathers can attend postpartum therapy sessions alone, as well. The emotional bond that develops between a father and his infant is a special, unique one that deserves attention so that you can be the father you want to be, not just the father you had. In some cases, we might discuss scheduling joint sessions with you and your partner to address communication strategies, relationship dynamics, and co-parenting strategies.

  • Yes - and in severe cases, we might recommend additional support. For some parents, developing a safety plan with brief, weekly check-ins is helpful, as well as a consultation with a psychiatrist or medical practitioner who is trained in postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders. While we do not prescribe medication at Calm Science, we would be happy to help you find you a medical provider who is trained in perinatal mood disorders so that you’re getting the best treatment team possible.

  • Yes! Online therapy can be particularly useful for parents who may find it challenging to leave the house due to childcare responsibilities or other constraints. Online therapy is perfect for mothers who are still nursing or parents with high-needs children or multiple children. Online therapy is equally effective for treatment of postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders. Online therapy is available for parents residing anywhere in Nevada, including Las Vegas, Summerlin, Henderson, Reno, anywhere in Virginia, including the Washington D.C. area, McLean, Alexandria, Great Falls, and Fairfax County, and anywhere in Florida, including Palm Beach, Miami, Miami Beach, and Key Biscayne.

  • The timeline for noticeable improvements can vary from person to person. However, many parents report experiencing a stronger emotional bond with their child and improved well-being within a few sessions. It's crucial to maintain realistic expectations and understand that therapy is a process that requires time and commitment.

  • If you have a history of trauma or other mental health conditions, then you’ve come to the right place!

As a trauma-informed perinatal therapist, I specialize in helping caregivers and parents who have complex trauma histories. You will not have to discuss your trauma in detail until you are ready. However, disclosing a history of trauma will help us tailor the treatment plan to address these additional complexities and may involve integrating other therapeutic techniques to help you get the best treatment possible.

It’s very normal for new parents worried that they might hurt their baby. This can be a symptom of postpartum depression or other postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. However, you don’t have to have a diagnosis to be worried about your relationship with your baby. In fact, normalizing this experience generally helps mothers and fathers open up about how they’re feeling, which usually prevents the risk of harming your child by getting you the help you need and deserve.
